Macarius of Moscow
(1816–82)
   Theologian, Historian and Metropolitan.
   Macarius was born Michael Bulgakov and was educated at Kurst and Kiev. He became Bishop of Tamboy in 1857, Bishop of Kharkov in 1859, Bishop of Vilna in 1868 and Metropolitan of Moscow in 1879. He was the author of two works of dogmatic theology, which reflect mainstream Russian Orthodox thought of the nineteenth century. He also produced an important twelvevolume history of the Russian Church.
